Gad Kalika Temple Ujjain – Ancient Shakti Peeth of Goddess Kalika
Gadkalika Temple, located about 4–5 km from Ujjain Junction near the Bhartrihari Caves in the Urdupura area, is an ancient and sacred temple dedicated to Goddess Kalika - revered as Ujjain Mahakali The Soul Energy. Though the current building is modern, its origins trace back to Satya Yuga, with a major renovation by King Harshavardhan around AD 606 and later by the Gwalior rulers. Legend holds that the famed poet Kalidasa gained his extraordinary knowledge here through the Goddess’s blessings.
Considered on par with a Shakti Peeth, this is believed to be the spot where Sati’s upper lip fell near the Shipra river in Ujjain. The temple attracts many tantra practitioners and devotees seeking divine strength and academic or creative excellence. Most worshipers offer red chunri, coconuts, flowers, and narmund garlands. Early morning visits are recommended for peaceful darshan and to experience the temple’s serene spiritual atmosphere. Visiting Gadkalika Mata Mandir is a deeply moving and powerful spiritual experience embedded within Ujjain’s rich mythological and cultural landscape.
